The required insulation thickness is not the same for every house. It depends on the insulation material, wall type and thickness, climate conditions and the building's energy-efficiency requirements.
For a typical house in Moldova, exterior wall insulation is often installed at around 10–15 cm using EPS or mineral wool. When materials with better thermal performance are used, a thinner layer may achieve a similar level of insulation.
Insulation that is too thin can lead to greater heat loss and higher energy consumption. On the other hand, choosing an excessively thick layer is not always justified if the additional energy savings do not compensate for the extra cost.
The optimal thickness should be determined through a thermal calculation based on the complete wall assembly. Eliminating thermal bridges and installing the insulation system correctly are also important.
Therefore, there is no universal insulation thickness suitable for every house. The insulation should be selected together with the wall construction and the requirements of the project.
