How Is a Window Properly Installed?

Proper window installation is just as important as choosing a high-quality frame and glazing. Even a good window can cause heat loss, condensation or water infiltration if it is installed incorrectly.

First, the window opening must be properly prepared and checked. The frame should be correctly positioned, leveled and mechanically fixed to the structure. It should not be held in place by expanding foam alone.

The gap between the frame and the wall must be properly insulated and sealed. Expanding foam can be used to fill the joint, but it must be protected from moisture and UV radiation. A properly installed joint should provide both thermal insulation and protection against air and water infiltration.

The position of the window within the wall thickness is also important. It should be coordinated with the wall construction and insulation system to reduce thermal bridges and the risk of condensation around the installation area.

After installation, the window should be checked and adjusted so that the sash closes correctly and the seals provide uniform airtightness.

Proper window installation is therefore much more than simply fixing a frame into a wall. Positioning, mechanical fixing, joint sealing, moisture protection and integration with the house insulation system all matter.
