How Do You Properly Insulate an Attic?

Proper attic insulation helps reduce heat loss and maintain a more stable temperature inside the house. A significant amount of heat can be lost through the roof if the attic floor or roof structure is not properly insulated.

If the attic is not intended to be used as living space, it is usually more efficient to insulate the floor between the heated part of the house and the attic. Mineral wool, stone wool and other suitable insulation materials can be used for this purpose.

The insulation layer should be continuous, without significant gaps between the materials. Proper vapor control and moisture protection are also important to prevent condensation from accumulating inside the structure.

Attic ventilation is equally important. Air should be able to circulate properly to remove moisture and protect the wooden elements of the roof structure.

The required insulation thickness depends on the material, roof construction and energy-efficiency requirements. Properly installed and moisture-protected insulation can reduce heat loss and lower the risk of condensation and mold.
